There is a significant workforce shortage of workforce within the aquaculture industry today

NTNU and the Guri Kunna aquaculture VET school have collected and gathered information from a representative group of 41 regional mangers that lead 520 staff in the aquaculture industry in Mid-Norway. The purpose was to investigate and document the situation regarding workforce qualifications and skills and their influence on recruitment.
This report summarizes the opinion survey analysis based on data gathered during 5 meetings with 3 large and one medium sized fish farming company. The ONE2ACT Eval instant response tool was used to collect the data.

  • Managers consider skills such as work quality, business orientation, proactivity, collaboration and independence to be more important than theoretical learning.
  • There is a significant workforce shortage within the aquaculture industry today. This is due to the rapid expansion of the aquaculture industry recently, and a sharp increase in recruitment.
  • 53% of the aquaculture industry acknowledges that the apprenticeship system is their most important strategy for recruiting qualified staff.
  • There is overwhelming agreement that the sector will be influenced by changes in the external business environment during the next 3 to 5 years, at both company and industry level.
  • Managers perceive that companies will be influenced by the introduction of new technology and methods which will lead to increased specialisation within their workforce.

A competent workforce is essential for aquaculture to progress

Industry leaders met for the FEAP General Assembly in May 2017 and took part in a facilitated survey to gauge their initial opinion of aquaculture workforce development issues. This report summarises the opinion survey results and focusses on aquaculture education and training needs. The data has been gathered using a combination of survey methods, starting with ONE2ACT Eval instant response tool during the meeting and followed by the Lime Survey system at the end of the meeting. The target group consisted of 36 respondents from 13 countries which mostly represented national producer organisations (55%) and fish producer companies (39%).

The data has been gathered during the FEAP General Assembly Meeting which took place in Venice on May 19th, 2017.

  • 98 % of the respondents highlight that a competent workforce is essential for aquaculture to progress.
  • Recruitment from local communities is considered important by over 80% of the participants.
  • More than 2 out of 3 persons consider the continuous updating of knowledge and skills to be important in order to keep pace with technological developments.
